Digital Stewardship
A clearer way to understand your building over time.
Identify change early and manage it with confidence.
Digital Stewardship for Historic Buildings
Historic buildings rarely fail suddenly.
They deteriorate slowly, often in ways that are difficult to see from the ground or during occasional inspections.
A slipped slate, a blocked gutter, a small crack in masonry, these issues are usually minor at first. But if they remain unnoticed, they can lead to water ingress, material decay, and expensive repairs.
Digital Stewardship provides a practical way to identify these problems early and manage buildings more effectively.

What Digital Stewardship Is
Digital Stewardship is a continuous, evidence-based approach to monitoring and caring for historic buildings. Each year, we create a precise digital record of the building using high-resolution photography and 3D modelling. This record becomes a permanent baseline of the building’s condition. Because the model is produced in the same way each year, changes can be measured and compared over time.
This allows custodians to see:
- what has changed
- where it has changed
- how quickly it is changing
This information allows maintenance to be planned before problems escalate.
Why This Matters
Historic England research shows that a significant proportion of long-term repair costs arise from delayed maintenance. Across a ten-year study of church fabric repairs, 42% of costs resulted from delayed repairs and consequential damage. These costs arise not because buildings fail unpredictably, but because problems are not seen early enough.
Digital Stewardship addresses this gap. It provides clear visibility of building fabric and allows emerging issues to be identified before they become serious.
A New Approach to Stewardship
Traditional inspections provide occasional snapshots of a building. Digital Stewardship provides continuous visibility.
It enables custodians, trustees, and oversight bodies to understand the condition of their building, prioritise repairs responsibly, and reduce the long-term cost of maintenance.
In an environment of ageing buildings, tightening budgets, and increasing governance expectations, Digital Stewardship offers a practical and responsible way to care for historic buildings.
What Custodians Receive Each Year
Each year Digital Stewardship provides:
- a high-resolution 3D model of the building
- true-to-scale imagery of every surface
- measurable geometry for analysis
- year-on-year comparison of condition
- identification of emerging defects
- evidence to support maintenance planning and funding applications
This creates a permanent digital record of the building’s condition and provides a clear audit trail for governance and conservation management.
